Describe GLEAM briefly and your current role within it?

GLEAM is a business start-up programme operating from The Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning, Durham University.

GLEAM is aimed at creative graduates, who are either planning, engaged in, or about to launch, a business in the North East.

My role as Programme Director is to manage all aspects of the programme, from concept and strategic direction, to recruitment of graduates and mentors, curriculum design and the training delivery.

Each graduate will attend 7 x 2 day workshops over a six month period for a programme of personal, professional and business development. They also enjoy a support package which includes advice from our professional partners: solicitors Ward Hadaway and accountants Haines Watts.  I also contribute research papers on mentoring and new venture creation and teach on masters programmes, both internally and externally.

What sort of things does your day consist of?

If I am running a workshop, for example, it will involve

planning, producing materials, liaising with guest contributors, as well as teaching.  The taught element might cover aspects such as ideas generation, validation or aspects of a business plan. I might also run one-to-one surgeries, or spend time signposting students towards what.

Superkrush - participant on Creative GLEAM 1

A Newcastle-based community film company will see its award-winning knife crime film screened on a national TV channel.
The Royal Television Society Award-winning film Shank - a collaborative project from Superkrush Films and Sunderland Young Offenders Institute - has been selected to be aired on Community Channel, which attracts 1.2 million digital viewers every month.
During 2008 Superkrush Films worked with a group of eight young ex-offenders to create the short film which deals with the negative consequences of knife crime.

Shank is scheduled to be shown several times in late July as part of Community Channel's ‘Meet the Future Season,' a month of programmes celebrating the talents and creativity of young people up and down the country.

Community Channel content and acquisitions manager Samantha Ellington said: "Shank really stood out for us among a number of submissions tackling youth crime due to its outstanding production values.

"We were amazed to hear that a number of the young actors in the film have never performed before as they were so natural and believable. In many cases the scenes were improvised which really adds to the strength of the production. The fact that local young ex-offenders were enlisted to help create the film makes it an ideal addition to our ‘Meet the Future' season of programmes."

Shank director and owner of Superkrush Films Chris Taylor said: "We are delighted that the hard work of the Superkrush team and, more importantly the young people involved in the project, has paid off again and we are looking forward to seeing the film in all its glory on the small screen."

Joseph Steele, currently a participant on the Centre's Creative GLEAM programme was runner up for Spirit of Entrepreneurship Student Award at Newcastle University Enterprise Challenge on the 7th May.

Our congratulations go to Joseph, who said:

'I'm really happy that I received this award. I couldn't have done it without GLEAM. Participating on the course has opened the door on what I can do as an entrepreneur by teaching me practical skills and giving me inspiration to achieve more. Watch this space...'
